You and your doctor have decided that Bariatric surgery is the best option for you, and part of the requirement is to complete a weight loss psychological assessment. This is standard procedure to assure you are a good candidate for the procedure, physically and emotionally.

What should I expect?

You might be anxious prior to the assessment, but don’t worry, this is not the type of test to trick you or to find underlying problems that lead you to obesity. The purpose is to collect information while educating and discussing important topics that will affect your health after surgery.

Remember to be honest. Bring your strengths as well as your concerns to the appointment. This will make the session more productive and supporting you to achieve better results after surgery. Also, do not assume that you will be automatically denied because you have a mental health diagnosis. There are many factors to consider and each person is different.

Easy process

You will take a computer test of about 30 minutes, followed by a clinical interview of approximately one hour. You will answer questions but also receive information and support. And your surgeon will receive the report within a week. That easy!

What happens if I have a Mental health diagnosis?

Many people suffer from some depression or anxiety due to their weight or other concerns and symptoms can be treated with medication and therapy. It is important for you to discuss your symptoms with the therapist to make proper recommendations and a successful process.

Would my insurance reimburse me for this assessment?

Most insurances do not pay for this type of assessment but we will check eligibility and let you know ahead of time.

Follow up is important

Many people who undergo weight loss surgery are not prepared for after the procedure. There will be issues of lifestyle changes that the doctor has already informed you. There will also be the psychological adaptation to the new person you see in the mirror, and your sense of self and identity could be affected. Perhaps the results are not what you expect, and if there are emotional issues that lead you to gain weight, they will still be there after the surgery. Psychological follow up is just important as medical care after surgery. Contact us to schedule your Bariatric psych assessment.
